SOUTHEAST UNDERGROUND FACILITY PROTECTION COUNCIL

CONFERENCE CALL MINUTES

SEPTEMBER 23, 1998

See the attached list of attendees.

The participants accepted the June 4, 1998 meeting minutes as they appear on the SEUFPC Home Page.

Annette advised the group that Carl Croft is working for a fiber company and will be a guest speaker on the agenda at the Damage Prevention Convention. We all hope Carl is enjoying his new job and that he will continue to be a member of our Committee. If he is unable to join us, he will be sorely missed. His contributions to the telecommunications industry and the One Call effort are truly appreciated.

No progress regarding the Telephone Association contacts or new listings in telephone directories have been reported at this time.

Jeff Showers reported that he and Bill Turner are suggesting that the committee participate in the Green Industry Expo to be held at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, TN on November 16, 1998 from 12:00 to 6:00 and on November 17, 1998 from 9:00 to 3:00. Our participation will help fulfill our commitment to set up a booth at 3 trade shows during 1998. Bill has secured a booth at a cost of $1,100. He needs to know which committee members he needs to bill a portion of the cost to, as we agreed to during our previous meeting. He will need 3 volunteers to help man the booth and as many handouts as he can get.

They also recommend that we participate in the following trade shows in 1999:

International Concrete & Aggregates Show in Atlanta, GA in January 1999. They are trying to obtain additional information and will advise the Committee.
ICUEE in Louisville, KY on September 28 & 30. There may be a conflict with APWA and OCSI meetings.
An Excavator Safety Show to be held in Nashville, TN. Plans are tentative and will be available at a later date.

Further plans will be discussed at our next Committee meeting.

Annette reported that The Southern Builders Show will be held in June of 1999, and a booth will cost $1,300. The Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee One Call Centers have already committed contributions. Others interested need to contact Claudette Campbell.

Claudette’s recent e-mail informed the Committee that the Damage Prevention Convention is going as planned. Four booths have been secured and two of them will be paid for by BellSouth and American Petroleum Institute. Annette advised she thinks the NTDPC and Southeast One Call are planning to pay for the other 2 booths. Terri Roseman committed $300-$500 on behalf of MediaOne. Claudette needs the names of volunteers who wish to work the booth no later November 10. The booths will be manned from 8:00 until 5:00 on Wednesday and Thursday. Each volunteer will be required to wear a "Dig Safety" shirt while working the booth. Therefore, she will also need the size and number of shirts need for each volunteer. She can purchase the shirts for $7.00 to $10.00 each. Any door prizes and/or contributions will be appreciated.

Claudette reported that we have a final design on the color coded cards to be used as handouts. The cards can be purchased for 7 cents each or possibly less if the order is substantial. She needs your order by October 15 in order to get the best deal. The call participants suggested that a sample be sent to each member of the committee so they can decide if they want to order. Danny will ask Claudette if she can fax and/or send a sample.

Claudette needs the graphics for the "New Member Package". As soon as she receives it she will bind the books for distribution to potential participants. Ron Horne and Terry Zachman are working on the required information and will be asked to forward it to Claudette.

Annette reported that the Alabama Line Location Center will reach their 2 millionth locate request during the month of September 1998. They have had their top 2 record months in June and August of this year, with June being the highest month with 26,266 locate requests processed. They are evaluating upgrading their computer system to an automated mapping system with both internet and intranet capabilities.

Cheryl reported that the new Sunshine State One Call facility is being built in Debary, about 30 minutes north of Orlando. Construction is on schedule and they plan to be up and running on January 4, 1999. The new center will be equipped with the most advanced telephone system from Lucent Technologies and one call software from Norfield Data Products called OCARS PRO. They will have the capability to send and receive tickets through a Windows NT web based format. Training of the management staff should take place in October. Their Board and staff anticipated delays with the installation of OCARS PRO because other centers were scheduled to have the system installed ahead of them. They will revise their transition schedule accordingly.

The conference call participants agreed to move the discussion of 1999 SEUFPC Officers to the December 1, 1998 meeting to be held in Atlanta, GA. Our records indicate that Sprint will be the host. Danny will contact a Sprint representative to obtain details.

With no further business to discuss, the conference call was concluded.
